As we prepared to land the plane at Manila airport a trigger of emotions started rushing through my body at the tipping point of tears. Being up in the clouds for 15 hours, I was thinking about how many times my family, and so many other Filipino family members have flown above these very clouds in the name of sacrifice. It was also this realization of the height of my drive to learn about the Philippines, a word that I’ve slipped from my tongue so many times yet haven’t been to since 12 years ago. Aside from this, being given the greatest opportunity to fill in different perspectives and parts of my family his/herstory that can’t be told on Facebook but requires a face to face conversation with people that share the same blood and traces of the same appearance. It was also that realization that when I leave in August the words kasama, family, the ND movement, Filipino, and the Philippines will have far extended and different meanings and feelings. And lastly, it must just be my heart preparing a new path to heal the sourness of sacrifice.
